PRNRS 098 - PRACTICAL NURSING PRACTICE TRANSITION

Prerequisite: Enrolled in the practical nursing program and eligible for readmission re-entry into the nursing program This course is designed to promote the success of nursing students that are reentering the practical nursing program. The course will review previously learned nursing content/concepts to refresh and build upon the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to support and build upon the student's learning. The course will focus on knowledge deficits in nursing content areas and test-taking success strategies and ongoing remediation efforts to improve academic success.

PRNRS 110 - PRACTICAL NURSING I

Prerequisite: Acceptance to the Practical Nursing curriculum and concurrently enrolled in BIOL 140 or completion with a grade of "C" or better. This course introduces nursing concepts using the nursing process and nursing interventions to meet basic human needs and adaptation. Emphasis is placed on learning the following concepts: patient-centered care, quality health care, technology and informatics, evidence-based practice, safety, collaboration, leadership, and professionalism. Principles of communication, assessments, basic nutrition, basic pharmacology, role of the practical nurse, scope of practice, ethics, health care law, health care delivery, health disparities, patient education, health promotion and safe medication administration, including accurate measurement and calculation are introduced. Fundamental application of knowledge, development of skills, and growth of professional attitude will be practiced in the lab and clinical settings.

PRNRS 111 - PRACTICAL NURSING II

Prerequisite: Completion of PRNRS 110 and BIOL 140 with a grade of "C" or better. This course is designed to reinforce concepts introduced in Practical Nursing I, and to develop intermediate and advanced knowledge and skills, focusing on using the nursing process to provide safe, culturally competent, therapeutic nursing care to individuals experiencing specific complex, acute and chronic health conditions. Pharmacological principles and safe medication administration, including accurate dosage calculation will also be reinforced. Emphasis is placed on advancing the role of advocacy and accountability with communication, coordination, prioritization, delegation, and documentation to provide safe and effective nursing care. Incorporating concepts identified in this course, students will apply knowledge and develop skills, and refine professional attitude, in the lab and clinical setting.

PRNRS 112 - PRACTICAL NURSING III

Prerequisite: PRNRS 111 with a grade of C or better. This course is designed to further develop concepts unique to maternal-child nursing, while utilizing a holistic approach to care and nursing process to assess and manage the health and illness needs of the childbearing and childrearing family. The course will focus on various phases of childbearing, including antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum, as well as complications of the individual and neonate. The childrearing component of the course will focus on growth and development from newborn to adolescence, health promotion and prevention, community resources, communicable diseases, immunizations, cognitive impairment, and common pediatric health alterations. Emphasis is placed on nursing concepts including family-centered care, professionalism, interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, evidence-based practice, clinical judgment, and legal and ethical standards. Incorporating concepts identified in this course, students will apply knowledge and develop skills, and refine professional attitude, in the clinical setting, and be able to provide safe nursing care to selected obstetric and pediatric patients.

PRNRS 160 - MEDICAL CORPSMAN TO PRACTICAL NURSE TRANSITION COURSE

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the METC Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program within the last five years. If more than five years, at least one year of experience using corpsman skills within the last five years, or department approval. This course is designed for Veterans who have completed the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program and seek to earn a practical nurse certificate. The program addresses differences in competencies between the METC Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program and those of a practical nursing program as delineated in the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. Program components include didactic, clinical and skills validation learning experiences. Upon successful program completion, students will be awarded a practical nurse certificate and may apply to the Illinois Board of Nursing for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by examination NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensing Exam- Practical Nurse).
