INTERPRETER PREPARATION COURSES (IPP)
IPP 110 - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I
Prerequisite: Approved reading placement score, or equivalent. This course focuses on developing expressive and receptive skills to produce course-level American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary, ASL sentence types, Non-Manual Markers (NMMs), and using ASL to interact on various topics. Required external contact hours support student language acquisition.

IPP 111 - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE II
Prerequisite: IPP 110 with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval . This course is a continuation of American Sign Language grammar, structure, vocabulary and conversational skills acquired in IPP 110. Required external language contact hours support student language acquisition.

IPP 112 - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE III
Prerequisite: IPP 111, IPP 118, and IPP 121 with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval. This course is a continuation of American Sign Language grammar, structure, vocabulary and conversational skills acquired in IPP 110 and 111. ASL translation and performance projects are introduced. Required external contact hours support student language acquisition.

IPP 115 - DEAF CULTURE I
Prerequisite: Approved reading placement score, or equivalent. This course is designed for students with no previous knowledge of the Deaf community. It focuses upon major historical events and figures in the Deaf community, examines issues in American Deaf culture, resources utilized by the Deaf community, compares perspectives of Deafness and identifies norms of American Deaf culture.

IPP 118 - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: FINGERSPELLING AND NUMBERING I
Prerequisite: IPP 110, 115, and 120 all with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval. This course reinforces students' abilities to use the American manual alphabet (fingerspelling). Concentration focuses on receptive and expressive skills, involved in the production of the American manual alphabet, lexicalized signs, and numbers. Extensive drills and practice, with an emphasis on real-world situations, are incorporated. Required external contact hours support student skills acquisition.

IPP 120 - INTRODUCTION TO INTERPRETING
Prerequisite: Approved reading placement score, or equivalent. This course introduces students to the profession of Sign Language interpreting. The path to employment as an interpreter, through certification and licensure processes, employment venues, and language modalities of the interpreting process are explored. Students are required to interact with interpreters in diverse settings.

IPP 121 - PRACTICAL AND ETHICAL APPLICATIONS OF INTERPRETING
Prerequisite: IPP 110, 115, and 120 all with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval. This course focuses on ethical practices, professional processes and national resources which are utilized by professional interpreters. Students are required to interact with interpreters in community settings.

IPP 210 - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE IV
Prerequisite: IPP 112 with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval. This course is a continuation of American Sign Language grammar, structure, vocabulary and conversational skills acquired in IPP 110, 111 and 112. ASL translation and performance projects continue. Required external contact hours support student language acquisition.

IPP 211 - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE V
Prerequisite: IPP 210, 216, 220, and 230 all with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval. This course is a continuation of American Sign Language grammar, structure and vocabulary acquired in IPP 110, 111, 112 and 210. ASL translation and performance projects continued. Required external contact hours support student language acquisition.

IPP 216 - OCCUPATIONAL INTERPRETING
Prerequisite: IPP 112 with a grade of "C" or better or department approval. This course focuses on the role of the professional interpreter in varied settings, including educational, medical, mental health, social services, religious and performing arts. It analyzes distinctions of working as an employee versus an independent contractor, and explores employment resources on the state and national level.

IPP 220 - INTERPRETING I
Prerequisite: IPP 112 a grade of "C" or better and or department approval. IPP 221 - INTERPRETING II
Prerequisite: IPP 210, 216, 220, and 230 all with a grade of "C" or better, or department approval. IPP 230 - VOICE INTERPRETING I

IPP 260 - INTERPRETING INTERNSHIP
Prerequisite: IPP 210, 216, 220, and 230 all with a grade of "C" or better or department approval. This course focuses on student immersion in real-world interpreting and exploration of career potential. The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct will be applied to all aspects of internship experiences. Students will assess their work to improve professionalism and interpreting performance. They will demonstrate a commitment to career-long learning by creating a professional portfolio.
