NUMERICAL CONTROL TECHNOLOGY COURSES (NCTK)

NCTK 110 - INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROL (CNC) SYSTEMS

Prerequisite: MACTR 121 with a "C" or better or departmental approval. Students will learn to program, edit, and produce a finished part using a three- axis computerized numerical control (CNC) vertical machining center and CNC lathe. The course will start with basic programming methods and advance to more complex programming codes. Students will be responsible for setting-up and producing finish parts within the tolerances that are specified. The course will also prepare students to complete NIMS level 1 CNC milling and lathe certifications.

NCTK 114 - CNC MACHINE OPERATION

Prerequisite: NCTK 110 with a grade of "C" or better; or department approval. This course prepares the student for practical programming assignments, and is designed to give advanced hands-on experience in the setting up and operation of CNC machining and turning centers.

NCTK 210 - FUNDAMENTALS OF CNC PROGRAMMING

Prerequisite: NCTK 110 with a "C" or better and appropriate math placement score or equivalent, or departmental approval. This course includes the theoretical and practical aspects of writing manual numerical control programs. Included is coding formats, preparatory functions, miscellaneous functions, and point-to-point and continuous path programming. Emphasis is on developing programs for three axis machine tools.

NCTK 255 - INDEPENDENT STUDY

Prerequisite: Department approval. This course provides the opportunity to work on a technical project, research, or other specialized study related to individual academic needs. A written plan for the independent-study project is developed with a faculty member (including a detailed description of the project, the number of credit hours assigned to it, the evaluative criteria to be used, and other relevant matters), and the project is carried out under the periodic direction of the faculty member. The written plan is submitted to the dean/associate dean for approval and remains on file within the department, together with a final written report submitted to the faculty member by the student. Repeatable up to a maximum of five semester hours of credit.
